Today for the first time I feel pretty good about this bird's behavior. She flew back and forth several times, and today most of the time landed on the green perch at the far end, which is an improvement, even from Wednesday according to Renee.
Flight seems pretty normal, although slightly loud, bird is alert and aware but not too stressy.
I did not see a wing droop today.
No where bigger to move today, so just continue as planned. I do not need to recheck this bird, as I think she just needs conditioning now. Dr Gardner

BAR, flying more readily today than last week, not allowing me to get too close most of the time. Flight is a bit noisy and a little rough, and she still will not land on the perches the majority of the time, only actually hitting a green perch once. She usually aims for the corner of the mew above the door and crashes into the crash strips. However, not standing on the ground with shoulders hunched and tail spread any more, which is a huge improvement.
Weight is up. Despite her abnormal activity the feathers are beautiful and there are no wounds or bruises on the cere.
Continue with conditioning, will increase exercise and recheck the next time I am here. Dr Gardner

Assessed in F1. First noted that bird started out on ground, not on perch. Would fly from one side to another, but never to perch, would always hit the door or the back of the habitat. Would end up on the ground - looks stable there, tail slightly spread and sometimes a bit hunched, but better than last week.

However, my impression is that he cannot coordinate landing on the perch well.
We brought inside and did a thorough eye exam - nsf
Looked at tail base again, in my opinion normal.
After discussing w/ ME, opted to move back out. There appears to be improvement from last week, and he just moved to this habitat, but should be assessed very carefully going forward. Recheck in 1 week. Dr Gardner

I am entering this note after the fact but wanted to make sure my observations were noted.
Patient behavior is odd - on ground when I entered, does fly with some lift, but can't seem to hit perches, doesn't dodge well and over slow and hesitant. When harried noted to stand on ground with tail spread and shoulders hunched, not at all normal COHA behavior. Also seems a bit unsteady overall.
Caught up and examined area around tail base, can see older wounds but don't really see any swelling or significant injury.
In my assessment this bird is still abnormal neurologically. Discussed w/ Sunny, he has shown great improvement overall so we will continue to monitor.
Recheck in 1 week. Dr Gardner

Veterinary Exam, Outdoor Enclosure: Weight 454 grams
Patient was observed visually in the enclosure prior to capture and handling.

Patient's mentation this morning appears normal in terms of head and body posture with exception of the tail. All retrices are flared out in fan position at all times. The patient appears to potentially have difficulty bringing the retrices into compact position.

Response to people is normal and patient does not appear to have any CNS deficits today.

Physical exam: Base of tail of patients right side there is a palpable raised scab, approx. 1 cm in width and 0.5 cm in height. The scab I think is a previous abrasion or puncture wound. There is mild soft tissue swelling bilaterally at base of the tail and mild pain on palpation of the tail base. The uropygial gland appears normal.

Palpation of the tail in terms of the vertebrae does not reveal an obvious fracture anywhere.

Palpation of right elbow today was normal, no swelling.

Assessment: Probable tail base injury (soft tissue) at time of original injury. This is hopefully soft tissue in nature and not a true tail vertebrae fracture based on palpation. The vent is normal in size and tone and has normal function.

Plan: Keep patient in enclosure and monitor to make sure patient is able to perch and avoid hitting the tail on the ground. Recommend an additional 10 days of meloxicam therapy to reduce soft tissue swelling. no antibiotic treatment needed at all as scab is healed over and no sign of infection.
Can change medications to SID going forward.

Recheck tail use visually in a week. Staff can also monitor over time to see if tail use is normal.

BARP, NOLO! Jumped off perch and ran side to side along back wall. Good and coordinated movement. I watched her for a little bit to assess. Reperched easily with good balance. Normal tail posture throughout. Repeated the running and reperching a few times before we went in to grab. Very vocal. R elbow seems a little thicker than L in comparison but wing gets easy & immediate full extension, joint is normal temp. Since we had her in hand I gave her fluids since still skinny. Put meds in food and placed all food on perch.

She got back up on perch after tx and did take a few seconds to find her balance but generally looks a lot better than when I saw her last.

I evaluated the intake radiographs. Agree with a R coracoid fracture at the keel, but also think the head of the coracoid, where it articulates with the shoulder, looks somewhat deformed and more opaque than the other shoulder. Overall alignment is good but it looks odd.

When placed on the ground the bird is mildly ataxic - it is a bit difficult to evaluate her complete neurologic status because she is so jumpy, but no head tilt seen and today has normal menace OD (I am told this is an improvement even from yesterday).

Given the odd appearance of the R coracoid opted to anesthetize again for PT and repeat radiographs.
Anesthetized with Isoflurane and took VD and H-view radiographs.
R elbow is oddly swollen - seems unlikely to be due to the wrap since it was tape, but do not see any other cause.

Radiographs are very similar to intake. On palpation, shoulder is very stable and there is good ROM in the joint.
I suspect that the coracoid fractures are older and calloused, thus the odd appearance of the fractures at the head of the coracoid.
Bird is still quite thin and had LOs so gave 15 ml LRS with vitamin B and force fed today.
Recommended leaving wrap off for now, but monitor for droop. Check elbow EOD to make sure the swelling/ edema is improving. Re-wrap with care if drooping.
Monitor closely in habitat and assess neurological signs.
I will put for Dr Tracey to evaluate Tuesday, and I will recheck in 2 weeks. dr Gardner
